Laser-induced desorption of Ar from Cu(1 0 0) probed by two-photon photoemission spectroscopy of image-potential states

چکیده
Comparing the intensities of the well separated two-photon photoemission lines from image-potential states on clean and Ar covered Cu(1 0 0) surfaces we show that Ar atoms are desorbed by photons of only 4.43 eV energy. The crosssection of this desorption by electronic transition process is very low, only 1.3 barn (1.3 · 10 24 cm). Experimentally, it is accessible due to the high light intensity attainable within the laser focus and the sensitivity of our technique to detect very small islands of bare metal which are created by the desorption process. By varying the thickness of the Ar layer we show that only atoms from the layer directly physisorbed onto the metal surface are excited. Within the range of our laser intensities, the yield is linear with the photon flux, indicating a one-photon process. Possible mechanisms for this photon-stimulated reaction are discussed. 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Time-resolved two-photon photoemission of buried interface states in Ar/Cu(100).
We demonstrate the existence of buried image-potential states at the interface between thick Ar films and a Cu(100) substrate. The electron dynamics of these solid-solid interface states, energetically located above the vacuum level in the band gaps of both materials, could be investigated with time-resolved two-photon photoemission for an Ar layer thickness up to 200 A. Relaxation on time scal...

The electronic structure of a hexa-cata-hexabenzocoronene (HBC)/ Cu(111) interface is investigated by two-photon photoemission over a range of coverage from 0 to 2 ML monolayers. It is found that increasing the HBC coverage shifts the vacuum level of the Cu substrate until this shift saturates at a coverage of ∼2 ML. Over this same range of coverage, the Shockley and the bare-surface Cu(111) im...
متن کاملMomentum-resolved lifetimes of image-potential States on cu(100).
The dependence of the inelastic lifetime of electrons in the image-potential states of Cu(100) on their momentum parallel to the surface has been studied experimentally by means of time- and angle-resolved two-photon photoemission and theoretically by evaluating the electron self-energy within the GW approximation. The pronounced decrease of the n = 1 lifetime from 40 fs at normal emission (k(p...

We review the influence of rare-gas layers on image-potential states at metal surfaces. Experiments on Xe, Kr, and Ar on Cu(100) and on Xe/Ru(0001) that use the technique of time-resolved two-photon photoemission are discussed. The energetic position of the electron affinity, the geometry of the adsorbate layer, and dielectric screening are the factors that influence the dynamical and energetic...
متن کاملMechanisms of high-order perturbative photoemission from Cu(001).
We observed high-order 2- to 4-photon photoemission and above threshold photoemission (ATP) processes with 3.07 eV light from the Cu(001) surface. The intensity of 3-photon photoemission via excitation through the n = 1 image potential state significantly exceeded that of the 2-photon process. The ATP occurs either via single photon transitions from the image potential resonances above the vacu...
